Muhammad Ali[]

A lot of the people who refused to call Ali by his chosen name did so out of prejudice. But at least one famous reporter/boxing commentator (I honestly forget who) apologized to Ali to his face, on camera, for having continued to use his birth name. That's why I included that sentence about people not necessarily intending racism at times. Things were different at the time, and although I do not tend to accept this as an excuse, it is true that culture has changed such that what was once considered acceptable, non-threatening, and even polite is considered beyond the pale.

Malory is an example of a throwback to such times. She grew up and spent much of her adult life in times and milieu wherein attitudes toward difference and the norms of social behaviour were, to say the least, er, different. It seems to me she is not necessarily overtly racist in that she probably does not think of herself that way, but like many people she has beliefs that are in fact racist and often acts on those beliefs. Her distrust of/distaste for political correctness plays into her refusal to examine herself critically and her sense of entitlement as an elite, rich, white woman. In many ways she represents the establishment of those times so it is unsurprising she would act in this way. Rifter0x0000 (talk) 16:34, January 7, 2013 (UTC)
